A change of the disastrous conditions in the respective countries could only be reached on the political way by a continuous modification or creation of laws and the establishment of independent controlling organs,

This should be implemented at the administrative level of and by the EU since experience of and cooperation by animal protection groups over the years has clearly shown that existing laws are not observed, nor non-compliance is controlled or sanctioned and effective measures to ensure the protection animals are not being introduced by several national governments.

Realizing this, the M.E.P. David Hammerstein, Neil Parish and Alain Hutchinson, initiated the Written declaration on the welfare of pets and stray animals and thereupon many animal protections organisations from all over Europe gave notice of this declaration at their websites intending the visitors will request their respective representatives to sign it.
The newly founded international platform STARS / Stray Animal Rights Society of the association Ärzte für Tiere e.V. has put out a petition on this issue as well as Mrs. Barbara Kowollik, Against the killing of strays within the European Union, supporting the M.E.P. Hammerstein, Hutchinson and Parish explicitly.

Since many years I am engaged in animal protection with focus on Spain. I regard this platform as an outstanding opportunity to all international animal protection organisations to act at the political level of the EU.

Hopefully I aroused some interest in you, since the current situation – not only in Spain – is more than distressing and not sustainable in a modern Europe.

As Albert Schweitzer already stated:
»Animal Protection is education towards humanity.«

Animal protection is to concern everybody and on the part of the EU political measures should be taken at last to end these distressing conditions.

It could be expected from the member states of the EU that existing animal protection laws  will be observed, non-compliance sanctioned and legal loopholes closed and from these M.E.P who so far rejected to sign the Written declaration of Hammerstein, Hutchinson and Parish to do so at last – it is High Noon.

Please contribute your part as a journalist to draw the attention of the public to this topic.
May today’s political events convince those politicians, who ignore the issues of animal protection up to now, to give a positive signal regarding animal protection.
In case of a majority of the M.E.P. signing the Written declaration on the welfare of pets and stray animals the European Commission is urged to consider an legislative initiative for the protections of the animals!
